At ASK Dental Clinic, many restorations are available to replace decayed teeth.
- Composite: It is the most commonly used restoration material. It has excellent aesthetic and great versatility. Commonly referred as the "white filling", it can return a diseased tooth its original beauty and function. However, composite restoration material is retained in place with a bonding agent and is very sensitive to moisture when placed.
- Amalgam: Also referred as the "black filling". The use of amalgam is much reduced, due to concern of mercury contained in the material. However, although it is true that small amount of mercury is present in amalgam, there is little evidence that such material is harmful for a person's health. In addition, amalgam is an extremely durable material; and is relatively cheaper. At ASK Dental clinic, amalgam is still used for select patients; and we only replace old amalgam fillings if they are defective or are causing aesthetic concerns.
- Porcelain: The use of porcelain as a filling material is less common but porcelain is the most aesthetic material for the restoration of decayed tooth. The process is similar to that of making a crown; that impressions of treated tooth is involved and multiple appointments are required for the work on the same tooth.
